Xpress Relocation are one of 15 companies up for the award, which is going to be held at the BAR Annual Conference next month and will be unveiled at the Gala Night Dinner on 19 May.

Three judges, from the “FM”, “Client” and “Removals” sector, will assess each entry and will judge on any commercial move carried out between January and December 2011. The moves must have taken place within the UK and the client can be from either public or private sector.

The 2012 Commercial Mover of the Year Award is organised by the British Association of Removers (BAR), who are the recognised voice of the professional moving industry and responsible for professional standards for commercial moving.

Xpress Relocation are members of both the BAR and the Commercial Moving Group, as well as being accreditted to Quality Standard BS 8522, making us one of the leading commercial movers in the UK.

As one of the UK’s leading commercial movers, we need a number of vans and lorries to ensure safe transportation of equipment and furniture when moving employees’ possessions from one place to another in an office move.

That’s why Xpress Relocation have invested in a number of new vehicles for all our commercial moves. These new lorries and vans will now be used on all our moves and offer greater storage, allowing us to handle even bigger moves and relocate more staff from one office to another.

The Xpress staff are also undertaking HGV training to drive our new custom-built lorries. They have passed their theory tests and are in the midst of the practical training, which will allow us to undertake more and bigger office moves in the future.

15-17 May will mark the 13th annual Facilities Show, which is the exhibition for facilities and estates managers.

Last week we were brought in to facilitate a move at Virgin Active’s Support Offices in Barbican, London. 22 staff were moved, and the whole process took six hours.

This was an internal move consisting of IT kit, personal desk paperwork and filing. We broke down three banks of eight desks, moved them approximately 200 feet to another department on the same floor, and rebuilt them, unpacked the computer kit onto the correct desk and placed their crates next to them.

The staff were in their new locations and unpacked by mid afternoon, ensuring the move was completed with minimal disruption.

DSE stands for Display Screen Equipment and applies to all businesses with more than 15 people. As part of the Health and Safety Regulations Act 1992, DSE is an assessment that must be carried out for your employees and their workstations.

DSE deals with computer workstations or equipment, which can be associated with neck, shoulder, back or arm pain, as well as with fatigue and eyestrain. Surveys have found that a high proportion of DSE workers report aches, pains or eye discomfort.

These problems can be avoided if users follow effective practice, set up their workstations properly and take breaks during prolonged use.

That’s why your business needs to be covered for DSE, as companies have been fined up to ￡300,000 if they are not complying with the rules of DSE.

The BS 8522 is the only British standard specific to commercial moving and is regulated by the British Association of Removers (BAR), to represent the UK’s leading professional removal and storage companies.

The BS 8522 sets the benchmark for all aspects of the commercial moving operation and covers three phases of the work: initial contact, survey and quotation; the carrying out phase and follow-up including quality measurement and remedying the shortcomings.

The Standard requires a demonstrable and measurable level of compliance and achievement against each of these elements. Systems and procedures that are in place to provide evidence of these are audited and evaluated externally annually to ensure continued adherence and compliance to the standard.

Why you should use a BS 8522-accredited mover?

By ensuring you use a BAR member, it means that your commercial move will always be conducted to the highest industry standards. BS 8522 has been developed for the benefit of the Commercial moving sector, so for your own benefit (and peace of mind) you should always choose a commercial remover with the BS 8522 Standard and ensure that all tender documents include this Standard as a minimum requirement.

We’ve been writing about our work with OU in Cardiff and Milton Keynes and had some great feedback, and have recently been working at the Open University campus in Nottingham to maximise the office space and relocating desks and equipment.

The move at OU’s Nottingham campus involved relocating 70 staff and their equipment to a new premises.

Signalling Solutions are moving their headquarters from Borehamwood to Radlett and Xpress Relocation are helping them organise and complete the move.

We wrote about the project with SSL on the Xpress Relocation blog last week, where 120 staff were being relocated from the existing offices at Borehamwood to the new premises at Radlett, Hertfordshire.

Now the move is complete and Signalling Solutions are in their new HQ, Xpress Move Manager David Stanley talks us through how the SSL move went:

Phase One:

This involved 58 staff with all their existing furniture and filing. To minimise the risk factor we utilised spare desks throughout the building and had these built and in place before the start of the move on Friday evening. There was also eleven Pirouette cabinets to move that required emptying of their contents (90 linear Metres of filing), complete dismantling and rebuilding to a new configuration, and then the unpacking of the filing in the new offices.

When the staff returned to work this morning, everything was in place, the filing was unpacked and the staff just had their personal crates to unpack, before getting back to their day jobs.

Phase Two:

We moved the next batch of staff to the Lower Ground East Wing, together with their belongings. Again we installed the desks throughout the week utilising surplus desks from Borehamwood, so that by Friday evening we only had their IT kit and filing to relocate.

In addition to this we relocated approximately 200 pallets of finished goods plus some large industrial kit from the workshop.

For this part of the move we supplied a 40ft trailer, a crane and a flat bed vehicle, as well as an Air Ride box van to move three very delicate simulators that are vital to the day to day running of the business.

Phase Three:

The final phase consisted of specialist engineers to be relocated, together with all their laboratory equipment. Once these guys are installed we will then start the clearance of redundant furniture, and carry out a clean of all the floors, leaving it in a state to satisfy the landlords and new occupiers.

Xpress Relocation staff were brought in to facilitate the movement of all existing furniture within the ground floor of Philip Sully Building on the Open University Campus in Milton Keynes to install more desks to allow further staff recruitment within the departments.

Their work didn’t go unnoticed, as the Open University were so impressed they let us know how happy they were with the move.

Karen Russell, Space Planning Manager for the Open University, says:

“The Phillip Sully move this weekend has been such a labour intensive, complex move with all the floor boxes, furniture shuffles and working around IT staff and other contractors, it’s definitely been one of the largest I’ve ever done! On top of that we’ve moved Credit Transfer over from the AT Building as well.

I wanted to thank you for all your hard work in co-ordinating and managing these moves.  It worked very well with John co-ordinating the CTC move and Carl is as always a GODSEND when it comes to co-ordinating the ‘mechanics’ on these complex moves and he has done a fantastic job in communicating with all concerned, in particular with Central IT staff, making sure everyone knows what he’s going to do and when they can do their thing.

Also, Carl, Jenson, and Darren all did a dynamite job on moving all the floor boxes and we all know how many there were!!

I would also like to thank all the following guys for all their sterling, hard work and support, working double shifts and being extremely efficient in making sure everything got done from Friday evening right through to the end of play today!

Peter Grimes, Darren Bendall, Jenson Taylor, Barry Pearman, Danny Warren, Chris Carrigan, Paul Richardson, Alex Craw, Dave Millar and all the temporary staff who have been involved – I couldn’t have managed this without you all.”

The Phillip Sully building at the Open University is named after a former OU student of the same name, who completed a total of 61 courses at OU, including a Masters, PhD and two degrees. He is also the father of former Big Brother contestant Eugene Sully.
