MILTON KEYNES Inside Business

Relocates 280 staff at Mid Beds District Council from dual locations in Ampthill & Biggleswade to new central offices in Chicksands, Beds. Suzanne Campbell, Mid Beds Facilities Project Manager, said: "After analysing the returns from the tender process we were left with three excellent choices of companies in this very competitive market. What stood out with the Xpress offer was built in Project Management support on each site, allowing the Xpress team to truly understand individual division's needs. David Stanley who put the plan into place, and Peter Grimes who led the Xpress teams throughout the move, proved to be seasoned experts allowing us the comfort that everything was covered and the move would be delivered exactly as promised."

Mid Beds District Council moved into Priory House, their new offices at Chicksands, during the first week of August 2006. The move was staggered during the week 31st
July to 5th August to minimise disruption of services to local people. The building opened to the public on Monday 7th August.

The carefully planned move went seamlessly and disruption to customers was kept to a bare minimum. The dedicated move crew comprised of 20 porters, 2 Foremen and 3 vehicles and drivers. The move was split into six daily phases, moving in a complete floor in each wing each day over a 6 day period to complete the move in time and within budget.

The specially designed building comprises of 2 floors and 3 wings containing approx 50 workstations per wing, a state of the art Council Chamber and a design lead cafè facility.

Xpress Relocations Move Manager Peter Grimes said: "Working with Mid Beds was a pleasure. Their management organisation before the move helped us to gain an understanding of the culture at Mid Beds, and the constant liaison with their project team, together with our eager approach to get the job done

helped us to achieve the task as planned."

Work began early in 2005 on the £15m project to replace Mid Beds' ageing offices in Ampthill and Biggleswade with a new building which would save repair and refurbishment costs, be more environmentally friendly and accessible and bring staff
together on one site for the first time.

Mid Beds' purpose-built building has low-cost natural ventilation is energy efficient and is fully accessible to disabled people. Modern electronic cabling allows their IT systems to be easily updated to take advantage of new technologies.

Once the "people move" was completed into Priory House, then came the massive task of clearing both Ampthill and Biggleswade of all old furniture and sundry items. In line with the ethos of Mid Beds culture for caring for the environment, unwanted furniture that could be salvaged was donated to local schools and charitable groups. Items that could not be re-distributed were carefully dismantled, split down and taken to the relevant recycling centres.

New Machinery
We are pleased to announce the new arrival of a 'Powermate', Liftkar Powered Stairclimber and Busilift. The Powermate is used to transport heavy items such as comms cabinets and safes. The Liftkar Powered Stairclimber is used for 4 drawer filers etc.

The beauty of this equipment means that buildings without lifts or buildings with small lifts are accessible due to them being able to go up the stairs. This equipment is only able to be used by trained operatives of which we now have 8 members of our team certificated.

The Busilift enables us to move full cabinets and filers around meaning the customer does not have the hassle of packing and unpacking and also the worry of placing everything back in the correct order.
